Department of Surgery
From its formal inception in 1954 under the stewardship of Dr. FC Eggleston, the Department of Surgery has gone from strength to strength. Besides patient management, academics in the form of undergraduate and postgraduate teaching, and research, continue to form the backbone of the Department.
Undergraduate teaching is spread across six to ten batches of students coming to us, 6 days a week. These students are rotated through all the units of the department. Their teaching routine includes seminars, bedside teaching during morning rounds, case presentations, out patient posting as well as in operation theatres and casualty.
Postgraduate teaching is facilitated through weekly conferences and seminars. The department is thoroughly committed to supplementing medical education with departmental conferences/ seminars presented by residents, faculty and guest speakers. Special workshops and tutorials are organized for the postgraduates. A surgical skills area was established for the purpose of teaching laparoscopic skills.
This lab has two laparoscopic trainers and thus initiates the postgraduate students in the art of laparoscopy. The facility also has suturing and knot tying models, mannequins for intubation etc.
Department of General Surgery has three units and each unit was performing all kinds of surgery encompassing the G.I Tract, liver, biliary tree and pancreas, endocrine & breast, vascular and acute trauma surgeries.
Upper GI & HPB Surgery:
A separate Upper GI and HPB clinic was started in the surgical OPD. This unit takes care of all surgical problems related to this specialty, including primary and secondary malignancies of the liver.

machine will be installed in this clinic to enable proper screening for
breast cancer.
